An Anthology Of Anthologies (Part One)

When I was much younger and just starting out reading SF, I used to buy a lot of anthologies from my local branch of Woolworths or the newsagent’s book carousel. I did this like everyone else – to learn which of the authors contained within would be best followed up on, there were always a few turkeys but this is where my passion for certain writers (and the genre as a whole) first developed.

As I’ve got older and more into collecting books, I’ve not picked up as many anthologies as in my formative years, mainly because I know what I like now. This still hasn’t stopped me from occasionally indulging in a purchase however! I always enjoyed the Judith Merril and the bizarrely named Groff Conklin edited books so they’ve become something I always keep an eye open for. Do I need to say that I’m also a sucker for a great cover? Thought not.

So, here is my first anthology of eight anthologies, all edited by either Judith Merril or Groff Conklin. A selection of books with eye-catching covers plucked from the shelves of my library for your enjoyment;

    Hey there! The Judith Merril Best of the Best part One (1970) is definitely Josh Kirby, and her Best of Sci-Fi 2 is surely Powers?

      Hi Bernie, hope you’re keeping well. I suspected the Josh Kirby art but the other isn’t Powers as far as I can tell from the cover guide in his art book. It may have slipped through though but isn’t signed which is unusual for him. Take care Bernie.

    But the “Powers” one is cropped, maybe sig lost? The Kirby one isn’t showing a sig either, but I know that’s definitely him because it IS in the checklist 🙂 E-mail will follow in a couple of days (non-blog stuff) Bernie xx

    Hmm, that 9th Annual S-F cover was used for an earlier novel… Pangborn’s West of the Sun.

    And the artist is Hoot von Zitzewitz. His art is ultra easy to identify — they are all similar types of collages. I did a post on him a while back…

      Thanks Joachim, I hadn’t thought of Hoot. I’ll update the post later and check yours out too.

    Best of SF 2 is DEFINITELY without the slightest doubt Powers as Bernie points out 🙂

    I’m almost positive Minds Unleashed is Paul Lehr. He loves those large faces… And the textures are similar.

    Another great post I am a big Conklin fan and Merril’s anthologies have introduced me to some great new to me authors and stories. I had not see the Minds Unleashed cover but I have a copy of Giants Unleashed with a cover by Louis S. Glanzman that is wonderful..

    Regards
    Guy

      Thanks for the kind words Guy, who doesn’t love a good Conklin/Merril anthology – glad to hear that you’re also a fan. Would like to see your cover of Giants Unleashed, I’m a sucker for a bit of Glanzman myself… All the best.
